Richard Höglund (b. 1982, Sumter, South Carolina) is an American-born artist known for a research-led practice rooted in drawing. Trained in Boston and Strasbourg, he develops layered compositions informed by literary, historical, and philosophical references. For Höglund, drawing is the most immediate articulation of thought, preceding its transformation into language.
Using elemental and unconventional materials-marble dust, pulverised bone, shells, and precious metals-he addresses themes of memory, light, and material transformation. The choice of materials reflects their alchemical nature and responsiveness to time: silver that tarnishes into shadow, bone black that swallows the light, marble dust that carries its endurance like memory.
As he notes: "By combining different materials, in specific ways, within specific geometries, their meanings start to interact with each other and to create a story."
Höglund's series, including Sea Pictures, Four Quartets, and Vine Pictures, reflect this sustained engagement with form and meaning. He has exhibited internationally, with solo presentations in London, Miami, Dubai, and Geneva.
Richard Höglund lives and works in Athens, Greece.
