Lane Gallery London is delighted to present 'Chapter 1.1: I am the garden you are no longer looking after', a solo exhibition by Ukrainian multidisciplinary artist Masha Reva. The exhibition features the artist's most recent series, created between 2022 and 2024, comprising of a variety of mediums, including paintings, drawings, a sculpture, and an installation. The series demonstrates Masha Reva's distinctive artistic language: her abstract and surrealistic compositions are alive with vibrant colours and dynamic energy.
The artist finds her primary source of inspiration in the vivid dreams she experiences, where images and encounters weave together to form a narrative for her artwork. Especially in recent years, amidst the turmoil of her war-torn homeland, these dreams have become her own private sanctuary, offering a respite from the harsh realities of the world around her. Masha explains: 'despite the ruthlessness of the current reality, strength can be found in a state of dreaming; my dreamworld gives me hope, energy and food for thought every time when a new version of myself awakens. There has not been a single night in my life when I have not seen a dream'.
The series titled 'Chapter 1.1: I am the garden you are no longer looking after' was indeed born from a dream experienced by Masha Reva a few years ago. In her dream, Masha heard the opening line of a poem that inspired her deeply. The poem led the artist to envision a surreal garden where humans take on the form of botanical creatures. This unique garden not only serves as a mirror reflecting one's inner world but also acts as a portal to a limitless realm of creativity. The 'I am the garden you are no longer looking after' series therefore marks the beginning of Masha's exploration of this concept, with plans to continue developing it in the future.
A Central Saint Martin's London graduate in Fashion and Design, Masha now runs her own studio in Kyiv, where she has been focusing on the mediums of painting, drawing and sculpture. In fact, as mentioned, Reva works in various artistic mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, as well as performance art and design. Her curiosity for experimenting with different art forms has resulted in an eclectic list of creative projects and initiatives throughout her artistic career. These works have also gained critical acclaim: Masha Reva's works have recently appeared in group exhibitions such as 'Under the Open Sky' in Berlin in 2022 and 'Kaleidoscope of Histories' in Albertinum SKD museum in Dresden in 2023.
'Chapter 1.1: I am the garden you are no longer looking after' marks Masha Reva's first solo exhibition in London. The exhibition is on view from 10 May until 16 May at 12 Saint George Street, First Floor, W1S 2FB.
